DAIRY MARKETING CONDITIONS
EVIDENCE BEFORE COMMISSION. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 22. Marketing!- questions . were dealt with in the evidence {given before the Dairy Commission to-day. _ The witnesses were Mr C. H. Andrews, of Messrs J; B. Macewan and Co., Ltd., and Mr G. A. Mills, agent for Messrs AJ. Mills and Co.. Lid., London. Further evidence will be heard to-morrow.
The London County Council has its own flock of prize sheep. On its wage list are men with such varied occupations as greasers; chaplains, rat-catchers, river pilots, blacksmiths, and three-pruners. At Belmont, Surrey, the London County Council owns a wonderful lamboratoiy where a staff of 20 chemists under the supervision of three doctors spend their time manufacturing anti-toxin serums for diphtheria, smallpox, and other contagious diseases. Part of the .London County Council’s routine duty is to attend to the sewerage problems • of. London, i? out vessels are engaged in carrying the sludge out to the Black Deep in the North SeaEach vessel has a steward and a ships boy, and two, sometimes three, greasers its crew of gangers and flnshers. At Hollesley Bay, ou the east coast of Suffolk, the council runs, under the administration of the Public Assistance Committee, s. farm of 1300 acres, famed throughout eastern counties -for its flock of sheep. Last year the total prize-money won by the sheep amounted to £156. or just over £1 per sheep.
