GORE HORSE SALE
DRAUGHTS IN DEMAND The first of a series of horse sales conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., was held at Gore on Saturday last. The fixture, which marked the opening of the horse sale season for Southland, attracted a record' attendance of farmers from all parts of Southland and Otago. The entry if mixed in quality was substantial, and included in the 62 animals auctioned were some really outstanding young draughts. For these competition was spirited, and prices obtained were in keeping with those at northern fixtures held recently. Top price of £52 was paid for an upstanding, well-propor-tioned five-year-old gelding sold on account of Mr William Dickson, Otama, the purchaser being Mr James M'Murray, Gore. The latter secured £47 10s for a four-year-old mare of nice quality to the bid of Mr Robert Miller, Mandeville, while Messrs Christie 8r05.,. Tuturau, secured £46 for an upstanding five-year-old gelding. Aged horses made up a large section of the entry, and these sold at prices according to quality. Young unbroken fillies and gelding 6 were keenly sought after, and brought satisfactory prices. The entry of Shetland ponies, the annual draft from the Otaraia vendor, Mr Thomas Herron, attracted good competition, and sold at an average of £6. Hacks and light-harness horses met with an indifferent inquiry, and passings in this section were frequent.
