■ APPOINTMENT OF DIRECTORS DUNEDIN MEN INCLUDED MESSRS R. J. HUDSON AND JAMES BEGG. (I'eb UsiiED Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 20. The seven directors of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand who have been appointed by the Government as required by the Act passed last year were, announced by the Minister of Finance, Mr J. G. Coates, in an interview by telephone to-night. Three are State directors and four are representatives of the shareholders. Of these four, two are required to be persons who are, or have been, actively engaged in the primary industries, and the other two are required to be persons who are, or have been, actively engaged in industrial or commercial pursuits. The directors appointed are as follows : STATE JOHN GAVIN DUNCAN, Wellington. DAVID ALEXANDER EWEN, Wellington. RICHARD JAMES HUDSON, Dunedin. SHAREHOLDERS Primary Industries: JAMES BEGG, Dunedm. EDWARD JASPER HERRICK, Hastings, ■ Industry and Commerce: EDWARD ANDERSON, Auckland. NORTON FRANCIS, Christchurch. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES Mr J. G. Duncan, of Wellington, is the manager of the well-known firm of stock and station agents, Messrs Levin and Co., with interests throughout the North Island.

Mr D. A. Ewen is managing director of the firm of Messrs Sargood, Son and Ewen. He is an ex-member of the executive of the Associated Ghambers of Commerce. He was born in Middlesex, England, and after being educated at the Mill Hill School, commenced his career in the London office of the firm. He came to Dunedin in 1903, and after holding various positions with the firm he was appointed managing director in 1914.

*Mr Richard Hudson is chairman of directors of the firm of Messrs Cadbury Fry Hudson, Ltd., which was established with the amalgamation of the local firm of Hudson and Co., and Cadbury, Fry and Co., of England, in 1930. In addition, he holds directorships on a

number of public companies, including the Trustees, Executors and Agency Co., of New Zealand, Ltd., Distributors, Ltd., the Southern Cross Assurance Company and the National Electrical and Engineering Company. He is a native of Dunedin, and was educated at the Otago Boys' High School. Mr James Begg,has been associated with the primary industries all his life, and is at present the owner of the Bendigo Station, Cromwell. He is a past-president of the Otago Farmers' Union, the Otago Shcepowncrs' Union,

and the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society. He was one of the founders of the* South Otago Freezing Company, and is at present a director of several local companies. He was chairman of the Dunedin Repatriation Board and a member of the 1922 Taxation Commission. Three years ago he sat as a member of the Economy Commission. Mr Begg was born in Dunedin, and was educated at Otago Boys' High School. Mr E. J. Herrick, of Hastings, is a prominent Hawke's Bay pastoralist and a successful studmaster, specialising in the breeding of Aberdeen-Angus cattle, Mr E. Anderson is the managing director of Messrs Henderson and Macfarlane, Ltd., shipping agents, Auckland. He is also managing director of Messrs S. Ronald Maxwell and Co., Ltd., and a director of the New Zealand Publishing Company and Bycroft's, Ltd. He is a former president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce and deputv-president of the Auckland Savings Bank. He owns the Crossland Sheep Station. Mr Norton Francis is managing director of Messrs Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd., to which position he was appointed in 1919 when Messrs Guinness and Le Cren were ama'gamated with this firm. He is also chairman of directors of Messrs Mason, Struthers, Ltd., and a director of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company, Ltd. He lias had- considerable experience of public life. He was born in England, and arrived in New Zealand in 1593, com-

ineneing liis business career at Waimate. He served throughout the Great War with the Now Zealand Expeditionary Force, and now holds the rank of major on the retired list.
