TRAMWAYS COMMITTEE The Tramways Committee will submit the following recommendations: — MORNINGTON BU$ SERVICE The matter of provkfling additional transport facilities for ti*e residents of Morningtou by running exttra trips on the Moniington-Elgiu road-Bnileknowes bus run has been investigated.. The present bus service runs from Mod clays to Thursdays (inclusive) from 7.10 a»m. to 9 a.m., and from noon to 7.35 p.ra_ On Tuesday and Thursday evenings extra, trips are run between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.. Fridays the hours of running are Ibom 7.10 a.m. till 9 a.m., and noon till 10 p.m., and on Saturdays the hours are fr (mi 7.10 a.m. til! 9 a.m., and noon till 7.10 p.m. The average number of passenge fs carried is 8.5 per trip, and the servifce Inst year resulted in a loss of £302 6;t; this, however, without taking into account the value of the service as a fiteder to the main line, which would be appreciable. After taking the whole mat pr iuto_ consideration, the committee is of the opinion that, as the bus service is run' as a feeder to and in lieu of an extension to the main line, an augmented service is warranted, and therefore recommends thßt the following extended running be approved, viz.;—Mondays to Saturdays, 7.*10 a.m. till 9 a.m.; noon till II p.m. The recommendation is subject to the proviso that, if it be found latter that the

portion of the service between 8 and 10 p.m. is not .used, then that portion is to be cut out. '■ . v .. -, , The additional service is estimated to cost approximately £446 per annum, and the revenue is estimated at £134, leaving a deficiency of £312, which, together with the loss on the present service of £302, will involve a total charge on the Mornington line of £6l4' per annum. SCHOOL CHILDREN Further consideration has been given to the matter of extending the school children concession on the city lines to the Mornington line. The present fares arfc: —City to Mornington, Id; city to Maryhill, 2d; Maryhill or Mornington to city. Id. The committee is of the opinion that the fare for children between the city and Maryhill should be reduced to Id. That would bring the fare into conformity with the charges on the Roslyn line between the city and Kaikorai. . The committee regrets that it is finable to approve of the suggestion that the school children’s concession on the city , electric lines should be extended to the Mornington line. The city’fare was introduced at the incoptioh of the electric system, and has been continued to date only with difficulty, despite the fact that the operating costs on the .electric lines are much lower than those on the cable system. The fiet returns taken from -April 1 last show an increase of £44 over the corresponding period of last year—.2s per cent. FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee will report as follows: — ANDREW’S BEQUEST Consideration has been given to an application from the Legion of Frontiersmen for inclusion in the tramway concession privilege granted to units of the detencc ■forces. This would involve a grant out of Andrew’s Bequest Fund to make up the difference between the Id fare paid by each individual and the fare for the distance actually travelled. Your committee is unable to approve of any extension of the concession to any organisation outside the recognised defence units, and has advised the applicants accordingly.
