• AUSTRALIA v. ; HOLLAND AN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT. ‘ ' AMSTERDAM, May 10. > In the lawn tennis match Australia is leading Holland by five matches to one. Timmer defeated Crawford, 6—l, I—6, 6tt4# .*, ■ ; Queen’s Club is leading Japan by, five matches to one. Tinkler defeated Miki, 6- — l , 6—l . ' Crawford’s defeat was due to an extraordinary contretemps. Originally a. five* set match had been arranged, to which the players: had agreed. When Timmer won the, third; set Crawford stayed at the end of the court. Timmer advanced to the net to shake hands, at which Crawford was astonished to learn that the match was over. An inquiry revealed that .an official- told-Timmer just before the. match that it , had been altered ip three-sets, but neglected to' inform Crawford. f; -Timmer was very tired, whereas Crawford had not exerted himself.
