LAKE OUTLET BLOCKED

DANGER OF SERIOUS FLOODS

. CONCERN IN WAIRARAPA DISTRICT. (Peb United Pbess Association.) MASTERTON, May 10. ~ For the.past week. the. danger of serious flooding in Lower Wairarapa has been in plain sight, and the danger is not yet over, though it may soon be modified by the improving: weather on land and sea. A heavy gale has. kept Onoke Lake blocked and banked up during the week, flooding many hundreds of acres with salt or brackish water. It is feared that this may do serious damage. In addition, the water in Lake Wairarapa is so high that it is said that a rise of another 18 inches would send it over the banks to the east. _ On occasions the level of the lake on its eastern side has been lifted to a greater extent than this by a westerly gale. Relief will only be given when the outlet to the sea is again opened. This may be accomplished by-an outward rush of the great volume of water now banked up, or the outlet may have to be opened on account of additional silting during the gale. Up to the present it has been impossible, on account of the heavy seas, to attempt to open the outlet.
