THE LONDON TREATY
ADMIRAL’S CONDEMNATION NEED OF SINGAPORE BASE. LONDON, May 1. (Received May 2, at 9 p.m.) Admiral of the Fleet Sir Roger Keyes, condemning: the London Treaty of 1931, declared that Japan attended the naval conferences with her tongue in her cheek. He added: “ I tell you as a naval man that Japan is untouchable. We must have a base at Singapore to protect Australia and New Zealand, and I thank God that we shall have it in two years’ time. The battle of the navy must be fought out on the Downing street front against the Treasury and against the Government. The Air Force, the army and the navy must be brought up to a proper defensive standard.”
