DRAUGHTS

Conducted by JAS. BEECOT. Solutions of problems, games, and analyses invited for this column. Games should be written in six columns as below, and all correspondence addressed to Mr J. Beecot. 03 Leckhampton court, or Otago Daily Times Office, Dunedin.

PROBLEM No. 181. By S. Pickering. Black 4, 10, 14, King 19.

AVhlte 20, 27, Kings 3, 11 White to move and win.

PROBLEM Xo. 182. By M. E. Ponieroy. Black 20, Kings 15, SO,

White 16, 2S, King 8. Black to move and win,

TO CORRESPONDENTS. V. Butterfield. Oamaru. —You give a draw in Problem 177. Do you submit it as a correction o£ the author's solution? L. Parris, Wellington.—Your solution to Problem 173 is right, but in 174 your IS £3 is premature, as it allows White to play 19 15, which wins. Instead o£ IS 23 play 610 first. Parcel posted. G. Halliday, Mataura.—Yours received. Parcel posted. P. Butterfield, Oamaru.—Solutions to Problems 179 and 180 correct. Am using criticism. W. J. Marsh, Wyndham.—Yours to hand, with thanks. Will reply in a few days. Glad to have items. J.' Ingram, Mataura.—Glad to hear the stage is set for a very successful tourney.

(a) In Game No. 149 it says 2 7 is preferable. For my part I have always played text, as it limits White's attacks. (b) In same game play is given from Draughts Review (vol. 5, page 31), claiming a win against text. I have played text many times, for I think it is as sound as a bell. 1 6, 25 21, now 3 8 is trunk, but 6 9, as played in Game No. 149, is a definite loss. The correct reply to 6 9 is 20 16; this 20 16 (Richmond V. Lees) is given in the books as a draw, but White can win. (c) I have not seen the play for the win, but I submit text as an easy draw.

The game below is contributed, together with the notes, by -Mr L. Parria, of 'Wellington. His opponent, Mr Parris says, "is late of Dunedin." Mr Parris was recently matched against Mr Stuthridge to play by correspondence.

(a) I expected 13 17, 30 25, 14 18, 21 14, IS 27, etc. (b) Loser. 17 21 appears to draw.

CRITICISM. Mr F. Butterfleld writes: The following play seems to correct the terms of Problem No. 177, by 11. L. Seiffert (Black 1,4, 8, Kings 16. 30; White 15, 17, 25, Kings 10, 22; White to move, Black to draw). The author says White wins:—

fa) Improves 1 5. (b) Retreat of King seems no better than text. (c) 10 15 loses by 14 10, etc.

SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS. Problem No. 179 (W. Jordan). —Black 9, 11, 20; White 23, 31, 32. *32 27 14 17 27 23 22 25 7 3 25 22 914 *l9 16 17 22 11 7 SO 25 711 *23 19 II 15 16 11 25 30 3 7W. wins. Problem No. 180 (R. W. Patterson). — Black 6,9, 12, King 10; White 13, 17, 20, King 8. White to move and win. 811 11 7 714 14 18 13 9 18 22 914 14 21 21 25 23 30 Gl3 Wjwlns.

EXCELSIOR DRAUGHTS CLUB. A movement is on foot to form a Chess and Draughts Club in South Dunedin. A room has been obtained next door to the Town Hall, in King Edward road. At a preliminary meeting a small working committee was formed, and a dozen members were enrolled. The club will be open to all, and will meet every Wednesday evening at 7.30. It is intended to have a special class for beginners, when instruction in the rudiments of the game will be given. An invitation is extended to all Draughts players in the South Dunedin district who are not attached to other town clubs to join with this club, and thus enable it to enter a team for the competition matches which will be commenced shortly. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP. By this time next week the struggle for supremacy will be commenced. Already we hear that a number of Dnnedinites ar'o packing their bags for Mataura—viz., Messrs J. A. Lucas, an ex-champion; W. O'Malley, winner x>f the handicap prize at Invercargill; R. Bolting, a runner-up on one occasion; "Bob" Weir, Dunedin's youthful product, who is expected to give a good account of himself. Mr George Duncan is also a possible starter. Cliristchurch will send, I think, Mr G. A. Brown, several times Dominion champion, Mr J, R. Glark, and probably Mr J. Shadbolt. There is nothing definite from the North Island, except that Mr J. Bruce (New Plymouth) is likely to como down ; but the first prize of £2O may draw some of the champions from there. It is hoped that Mr Calderwood will como and defend his title. There will probably bo a good entry from Southland, including Messrs J. Scott (the Southland champion), W. Muir, F. HutchIns, and the evergreen Mr 11. Morris. Some weeks ago Mr J. O'Neill (Waitatl) informed me that he was doubtful, and Mr W. Carswell (Mosgiel) is keeping quiet. It is hoped that both will decide to play. There is a likelihood of some visitors going from Dunedin, and they arc anxious about accommodation at Mataura. Tho secretary (Mr J. Ingram) informs me that there is no need to worry on that score, as board can be obtained at 25s per week. The latest report from the secretary sava there is now over £SO in sight, that the prize list as published will be maintained, and probably the handicap prizes improved.
