ROBBED IN CHURCH
VICAR'S WATCH STOLEN How he was robbed in church while preaching a sermon was told lately at the local police court by the Rev. J. Aubrey Cound, vicar of St. James-the-Less, Liverpool. , The vicar stated that he placed his gold watch on the arm of his chair on the chancel steps when he went into the pulpit. After preaching his sermon he found that the watch had gone. George Erie Edwards, aged 24, commercial traveller, pleaded guilty to stealing the watch, which was valued at £3. The vicar stated that Edwards, who was a church worker, was wearing a cassock and surplice and sitting in the choir stalls in a seat next to him. He did not suspect Edwards until the watch was recovered from a pawnbroker's and Edwards admitted he had stolen it. Pleading for leniency, the vicar stated that, apart from:this lapse, he had found Edwards a trustworthy man. Edwards was bound over.
