MOVEMENT IN BRITAIN GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE. LONDON, March 22. {Received March 22, at 11.15 p.m.) Mr Walter Runciman, in a speech at a dinner in connection with the research movement, told industrialists that if they supported the movement more generously the Government would give, increased aid. He added that industries representing an output of £1,000,000,000 were at present not connected with the movement. The average contribution to research associations amounted to only 7s 6d per £IOOO of their outputs.
Mr Samuel Courtauld said it was remarkable that nobody had discovered a new method in weaving, the principle of the loom being the same to-day as iu the time of the Egyptians.

SURVEY OF POSITION.

Mr Walter Runciman attended a meeting of the Lancashire committee of the cotton and rayon industries and gave a full and frank survey of the position created by the breakdown of the discussions between Lancashire and Japan, and answered questions. The committee sdecidcd that the remarks should be treated as confidential.
