PETROL PRICES

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Mr Gillies having expressed his indebtedness to me for one ox my assertions, I may presume that, by his silence regarding the main points of my letter, ho i« likewise indebted to me for correcting the glaring inaccuracies contained in his letter of March 17. The matter of the number of gallons of spirit which should constitute a "wholesale” transaction is a moot point, and ong on which an unbiassed opinion could not reasonably be expected from your correspondent. .1 am sure, however, that the general public will agree that the long-standing policy of the companies must be accepted as reasonable, since it has excited, till now, no articulate opposition. I hold no brief for any oil company, but in defence of the companies’ policy of assuring supplies of their genuine products to their commercial customers at reasonable rates, I felt constrained to correct the impression broadcast by your correspondent that petrol resellers were not receiving a fair deal. No other convincing rsponse to Mr Gillies’g grievance is required than the assimilation by him of the fact that 100 gallons of motor spirit are delivered into his tanks at the rate of Is 82d per gallon, whereas the same quantity purchased by me would cost me Is To|d per gallon—surely a sufficient discrimination to satisfy _ the most ardent supporter of the divine rights of the middleman. —I am, etc., Commercial User. Oamaru, March 22.
