(Per United Press Association.) WHAKATANE, March 22. Rangi Royal, supervisor of the Native scheme at Ruatoko, and Edward Riddle, foreman, were charged at the Whasatane Magistrate’s Court to-day with intent to defraud by wilfully falsifying time sheets in connection with a contract for the construction of 36 chains of road, the contract price being £22 2s 6d. Detective M'Lood, who prosecuted, alleged that Royal bad certified to the time sheets, and on big certificate Mr Anarua, registrar of the Native Court at Rotorua, had authorised payments. Before the work commenced four Natives concerned in the contract each signed for £5 Cs. The money was placed in an envelope and deposited with Mr Wilson, storekeeper, for safe deposit. On the completion of the contract each of the four received £1 6s, the balance being paid to other Natives. Mr Wilson, storekeeper, said that Royal received nothing from the money. The amount was all paid to the Natives, the actual contractors getting £1 6s each. Mr Platts, S.M., committed the two accused for trial at the Supreme Court at Gisborne, bail being allowed in £SO each and one surety of £SO each. WELLINGTON, March 22. Two houses in Taranaki street were raided this afternoon by a party of police. It is understood that a number of men who were found on the premises will appear before the court to-morrow morning in connection with alleged pakapoo playing.
