FLEET MANÆUVRES

SHIPS BATTERED BY GALE TWO SEAMEN LOST OVERBOARD. LONDON, March 15. (Received March 15, at 9 p.m.) A fierce Atlantic gale so battered several ships participating in the fleet manoeuvres off Gibraltar that they were forced to seek port, and two seamen were lost. The weather forbade the “ Red ” fleet, representing the British Isles, from using aircraft against the “ Blue ” fleet, representing an imaginary continent south-west of the Azores, but the manoeuvres were carried on in the teeth of the gale until 2.30 p.m., resulting decisively- in favour of the “ Red ” fleet, which defeated the “ Blue ” fleet’s attempt to secure a base on the Portuguese Coast and block the Mediterranean traffic, having already blocked the Atlantic routes. The “Reds” held superiority in destroyers.
