CHINESE FINED
SEQUEL TO OPIUM RAID (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, March 13. Heavy penalties were inflicted on Chinese who appeared in court this morning as the result of a raid on an opium den in Haining street yesterday afternoon. The occupier of the premises (Ng Kum Tong), charged with permitting the premises to be used for the purpose of opium smoking, being found in possession of pre. pared opium, and wilfully obstructing the police, pleaded guilty to the first and second charges, but not guilty to the third. Seven other Chinese were charged with being found unlawfully on premises used for opium smoking, and all pleaded guilty. The sub-inspector said the police had to force an entry into the building, as it was heavily barricaded. The usual paraphernalia was seized. On the first charge Tong was fined £IOO, with 10s costs, and a .guinea interpreter’s fee, in default three months’ imptisonment;*on the second charge he was con- r victed and discharged; for obstructing, the police he wa s fined £lO. Three others of the' accused with previous convictions. . were fined £2O each and the remainder £ls each.
