CHILLED BEEF TRADE
AVELONA STAR’S SHIPMENT IN SPLENDID CONDITION. LONDON, March 12. The Avelona Star’s New Zealand chilled beef was submitted at the Smithfield and provincial markets in splendid condition. Traders consider that the last two shipments show that chilled meat can now be carried from New Zealand equally as well as from Argentina, but they insist that the producers must provide young, well-bred beef to compete with the Argentine. The Avelona Star’s consignment is being released at id per lb below the Argentine price, and Id per lb above New Zealand frozen beef.
The two shipments of chilled beef mentioned were despatched from Auckland by the Blue Star Line steamers Sultan Star and Avelona Star. The Sultan Star left Auckland for London on January 12 with 1300 carcasses and the Avelona Star was despatched on February 3 with 2000 carcasses. The third shipment of chilled beef was despatched by the motor ship Tuscan Star, which left Auckland for London to-day with 2300 carcasses. The Tuscan Star is being followed by the, Doric Star, which is loading in the south, and the Sultan Star and the Trojan Star, which are en route from London to New Zealand in ballast to load for London. These three vessels will also load chilled beef at Auckland.
