SUCCESS OF LOCAL ATHLETES. Several local athletes achieved success at the amateur athletic contest between Otago and Canterbury at Oamaru on Saturday, E. J. Johnston (scr) winning the Three Alile with T. G. Pearspn (190yds) second. These two finished similarly at Dunedin recently. AL, R. Spillane, the New Zealand champion, again won the Hammer Throwing, and G. L. Day the 440 Yards Handicap. PALMERSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

The monthly meeting of the Palmerston Borough Council was held last night, and was attended by the Mayor (Air W. B. Galloway)j- and Crs W. Earley, D. M. Thomson, A. M'Gregor, J. J. Haggie, T. T. Thomas, J. S. Y. Morrigon, J. F. Warren, R. Riddle, and J. Gordon. CORRESPONDENCE.

Notice was received of the annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Town Clerks, to be held in Wellington on March 13, requesting the council to endeavour to send the town clerk.—Received. /

Advice was received from the Valuergeneral, giving the alterations under last year’s Valuation of Land Amendment Act in regard _ to new valuations on owner’s application. —Received. The Waitaki County Council wrote giving a detailed statement of the cost of the joint traffic, inspection scheme, the amount due to the central authority (the Waitaki County Council) from the Palmerston Borough being £1 5s for the quarter. The annual report would be prepared shortly and any comments on the work of. the inspector would be appreciated.—Received. Mr John Al'Cabe was granted a license to keep pigs. The report of the sub-committee of the Alunicipal Association of New Zealand in regard to the Local Bodies’ Association was received. Several letters were received in connection with the repairs to the culvert on the Dunedin-Chnstchurch main highway- on Ronaldsay street.—After discussion, the Alayor was asked to interview the , district engineers of the Railways and (Public Works Departments in Dunedin; as soon" as possible.

1' ’ REPORTS. Thie reports of the traffic inspector (Mr P. Laughton) for' the periods December ■ 14-Japuary 27 and January 28-February 20 wdre received. ' The\ foreman of works (Mr R. Paul) reported as follows:—Water channels have , been cleaned out on Clifton road. Young '.street, Goodwood road, and Birsa street. \ Footpaths hhve been weeded on Birsa street and Clifton road. A leaking water n»ain under a railway crossing has been repaired. Gravel has been spread vffiete required on the East, Boundary road, Goipdwood road. Burraness, Young, Start, Stroranesß, Brough, Birsa, Kirkwall, .Roseness, Auskery, and Copensha streets.‘An entrance to a residence on Stronsa eftreet has been formed, and cinders spread on it. The footpath dn Auskery street has been regraded and gravelled. 1A sunken drain in Young street has, been repaired, and a start has been made \to widen the street; The power grader has been employed on the main highway, a portion of -which has been scarified and Shag River \ gravel spread on it.—Received. The Works (Committee reported that an extra 53 yard* of gravel had been spread as they were ®n good gravel and winter was approaching, and 30 yards had been put on the highways in an endeavour to remove the corrugations. The procuring of weed killer was recommended. The lamp on the culvert had been stolen on Tlnursday evening, and the matter was in th»e hands of the police. A street light was necessary on the corner of Runbrake and \Brough streets. The removal of the clay banks on Start and Kirkwall streets recommended. —It was decided to wrtite to the Mosgiel Borough Council in connection with weed killer, and the extra gravel wad* approved. It was agreed to rerripve the light from the corner of Burranesss and Birsa streets aud place it on the corner of Roseness and Birsa streets. THp council decided to tour the town inspecting the street lighting, after a long discussion. The clay bank on Start street would be removed when required for ; filling up, and the .work on Kirkwall, street was approved and left in the hanejs of the chairman of works and the boroufeh foreman. The Picture Committee reported a profit of £5 16s 3d for the month, making a total profit'for the year so fair of £l3l 2s lid—Received. * . The Reserves Committee reported that the corporation sections had \ been inspected and there had been no cutting of hedges or grubbing of gorse recently on any of them. None of the authorised works had been done owing to tbo lack of men. —Received. * Accounts amounting to £327 11s 2Sil were passed for payment, and a bad debt'of 15s was written off. '* \ . GENERAL. Applications for the position of jdog lax collector at Is per dog were received from four unemployed men, and thatlof Joseph C. Trotter was accepted. It was decided to inspect the street lights on Wednesday evening. \ The captain of the Palmerston .Volunteer Fire Brigade (W. Earley) reported having had a call to Airs W. Moir’s residence''in Rosenesa street, and the water pressure had been good and the equipment in good order. Airs Moir had sent a letter of appreciation and a small donation. —-The council passed a vote of appreciation of the brigade’s smart turn out. DRUIDISM. . The fortnightly meeting of the Rose of Palmerston Lodge was held in the lodge room, P.A. Bro. Kilgour presiding and P.A. Bro. Meiklojohn occupying the V.A. chair. The Rev. Bro. Newton’s clearance to Star of Duntroon Lodge was granted. It was decided to accept the vicar’s invitation to be present at a church parade in the Anglican Church on Sunday, April 1. During the evening several suggestions were made regarding lodge routine, and it was decided to carry out these ideas in the near future.‘The Arch Druid ritual competition'' brought forward five competitors, and a very keen contest took place. LG. Bro. Lowen 3, P.D.P. Bro. M'Elwee 4. P.A, Bro. Logie retired. Star of Palmerston Juvenile Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Thursday last, A.D. Bro. D. Burrow presiding over an excellent attendance of members. After carrying out the ordinary business, an Arch Druid ritual competition was held. Min. Sec. Bro. Capstick, who secured highest marks, was presented with a book, P.A. Bro. Metcalfe, of Dunedin, haying given it for this competition. An interesting meeting was brought to a close with a game of indoor tennis, Brosi Hunt and Burrow being winners of the final heat.
