MINIATURE RIFLE SHOOTING

ARTHUR BARNETT’S CLUB. The third annual meeting of the members of Arthur Barnett’s Miniature Rifle Club was held in the Y.M.C.A. Club Rooms last Tuesday evening. The president (Mr Spence) presided over a fair attendance of members. The chairman in the course of his address stated that, as in the two previous years, the result of the club’s performance was gratifying. The continued keen support of the members went to prove that the club was attaining the end for which it was originally formed, not only in sport but also socially. During the season two teams were entered in the association competitions—one in A Grade and one in B Grade —and congratulations were extended to both teams in their efforts. Although neither team was. successful in bringing home the honours both showed their shooting to be above the average. The A Grade teand finished second and the B team third in their respective grades. During the year the A Grade fired 10 matches, won six, lost three, and drew one, whilst the B Grade team won seven matches, lost three, and drew one. As a result of careful management the budget was balanced and a small credit balance carried forward to the ensuing year. The report and balance sheet were adopted.

The following office-bearers were elected:—Patron* Mr Arthur Barnett; vice-patron, Mr S. Lawn; president, Mr I. Pollock,; vice-presidents—Messrs W. L. Johnstone, S. Sutherland, H. Mackay, A. Devlin, S. Wood, J. Spence, L. Wood, A. Blake; captain, Mr R, G. Graham; deputy captain, Mr F. Peterson; (secretary and treasurer, Mr C. J. Gamble; assistant secretary, Mr G. Ferguson; committee—Miss Waterson,/ Messrs Armstrong and Robson; delegate to Otago Miniature Rifle Association, Mr R. G. Graham.

The incoming committee was empowered to elect six lady as well as six male members to the club who were not members of the staff of Arthur Barnett, Ltd.

It was decided to hold the official opening “ shoot ” for the season on the evening of Thursday, April 12.

Crowds of peasants went from the surrounding countryside to attend the funeral in the village of Kloka, Jugoslavia, of a girl whose dream of death came true. One morning Darinka Eokitch. 20 years of age, told her mother that • she dreamed that she had been killed by lightning, She said she saw a huge black cloud, from which lightning came like great, spikes. As she sheltered beneath a tree she was struck by lightning and killed. This was dreamed not once, but several times that night. Next daiy, while the girl and her mother were hoeing a storm broke. The two took shelter under an oak, but as the lightning began to .play the girl ran to another tree. So implicitly did she believe in her dream that she feared her mother would be struck if they remained together. A few minutes later a great fork of lightning killed the girl.
