The length of an honours list in Britain was formerly a matter of considerable financial concern to many court officials who derived a substantial part of their emoluments from the fees obtained from the recipients of titles. Fees arc still payable, but they are not nowadays so heavy or numerous as a century ago, when it was not- uncommon for honours to be declined simply on account of the expense entailed. x
