CROMWELL JOCKEY CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING HELD BIG RACE TO FLYING AMY. (From Our Special Reporter.) CROMWELL, March 9. The Cromwell meeting was opened in fine weather, although there was a fairly stiff breeze. The course appeared to be in fair order, and the attendance was on the small side.

June the Third was a short-priced favourite for the Goldfields Hack Handicap, and put-stayed Notornis after the latter obtained over two lengths advantage at the start. Lux Lunae had the Upper Clutha Trot won but lost through over confidence on the part of his driver, and Captain Bingen pipped him on the post. Neola was placed third by mistake, as the position rightly belonged to Wynross, but the error could not be corrected owing to being discovered too late. ;

Pink Paper, Meadow Lark, and Captivate were taken out of the Cromwell Handicap, and Tippling was elected favourite in a fairly even betting race, Flying Amy took up the running and set a solid pace from Black Duke, with the others handy. . Flying Amy had a lead of about three lengths ,at the far turn about three furlongs from home, and when the others made an effort to close on her Dooley kept his mount moving and won by a length from Tippling. 5 Hystride was not too well placed on the outside at the home turn and Tippling got an opening on the rails which materially assisted him int,o second place. • Notornis, Gessler, and La Pompadour were struck out of the Mount Pisa Hack Handicap. Hot Tea got the best of the start, but an odds-on favourite in Arden’s Beauty soon ran to the front and made a one-horse race of it.

Lux Lunae was a strong order for the Kawarau Trot, and after waiting behind Wynross until reaching the straight came on and won comfortably.

Meadow Lark and First Song dropped out of the Queensberry Handicap. Master Anomaly was made an odds-on favourite, but he was asked to win to far from home. He was in charge in the straight, but Hystride and Black Duke beat him home. A strong breeze did not help the favourite ' to. carry his weight. Double Shot and Flying Amy started practically even favourites for the Lowburn Hack Handicap. They drew away from Notornis, and at the finish Double Shot stayed on. best.
