CHRISTCHURCH TRAMWAYS
RUNNING AT HEAVY LOSS, FINANCIAL CRISIS REACHED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, March 9. The financial affairs of the Christchurch Tramway Board have reached a crisis. The position is serious, and the board is greatly concerned. It will hold a special meriting on Monday, According to a statement by the chairman (the Rev. J. K. Archer). A deficit of over £IB,OOO is anticipated for the financial year ending March 31 next, and another substantial drop is expected during the following 12 months. Efforts have been made to attract more passengers to the trams, mainly by the introduction of cheap fares to the seaside, but although there has been a slight increase .in the number of fares taken the revenue has not picked up to any appreciable extent. The board is running its services at a weekly loss of between £250 and £3OO.
