RAID ON BOOKMAKERS FINKS TOTAL £6lO. (Pbb United Press NEW PLYMOUTH, M»rc% 7; Fines totalling £6lO were inflicted on six bookmakers in the New Plymouth' court this morning by Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M. This was the eeqijel to t *,-' police raid on Saturday. All pleaded. guilty. The defendants were Sydney Roy Lovell, hairdresser, £l6O or fctnr months* imprisonment} Ernest Robert Byers, farmer, £soj Frank Farrell, £100; Jack Johnston, of Waitara, £130? Ulander Agent, £150; Walter Ray, labourer, £lO. All were allowed 48houri» to pay the fines, Ray, who is a relief worker, being allowed three months. The police stated that Lovell had served a two months' sentence on a similar charge last year. He 'wli very bold in carrying on in so open a manner in centrally situated premise*. , ' Evidence was given of bete being made with the defendants by plain clothe* constables. . . .;
