ARTILLERY BAND

AN ENJOYABLE CONCERT A programme of a varied and entertaining type was presented by the Artillery Band and the Huimai Maori party in the Concert Chamber of the Town Han last night before a fair audience. Under the conductorship of Lieutenant H. F. Davie the band opened the concert with a spirited rendering of the march "Dunedin Artillery," after which an instrumental duet which earned unstinted applause was presented by Messrs C. Laurie and G. Tyrie. of the Maori party. Messrs H. Dalziel and L. J. Hesford, who played the xylophone duet, " The New Colonial," had to respond to demands for an encore, and a similarly warm reception .was given to Miss L. Todd for her tap dance, which was executed in competent fashion. Two humorous recitations were then given by Mr Claude Grey. These items were followed by a solo by Mr F. W. Simpson, "The Smuggler's Song," the first halt of the programme being concluded wita the band selection, " Merry Land," a potpourri of favourite airs which was played in very attractive style. The second portion of the concert was devoted entirely to items by the Huimai party, the members of which provided an entertainment that thoroughly caught the fancy of the audience. Both chorus and solo singing were of a high order, while the graceful, poi dances and the rousing hakas introduced a pleasing touch of novelty, and the instrumental work waS well in keeping with the general standard of the entertainment. Favourite Maori ballads in " Waiata Poi," " Pokare-kare, and "Hine-hine" proved exceedingly popular, while others not so well known were also heartily appreciated. - Among the soloists were Te Ara Nui, Ila laiaroa, the Batara sisters, Betere Paronie, and Mr B. Parata, all of whose items drew forth rounds of applause, while not less popular were the instrumentalists, Messrs B. Ellison, C. Laurie, and t». Tyrie. The combined singing of the party was also a feature of the entertainment. The accompaniments during the first part of the programme were played by Miss Kathleen Whelan.
