MONOWAI'S SECOND VISIT

CRUISE TO WEST COAST SOUNDS FULL PASSENGER LIST Gaily bedecked with lines of flags which extended from stem to stern, and with her spacious decks crowded with passengers on pleasure bent, the Union Company's intercolonial liner Monowai arrived at Port Chalmers yesterday afternoon from Sydney and Wellington. She was berthed at the south side of the George street wharf, there being a large crowd present to welcome the ship and her gay human freight. Many of the passengers lost no time in making tracks for the shore, and Port Chalmers presented a busy appearance between 5 pjn. and 6 p.m. The spell ashore was brief, as the Monowai was outward bound two hours after her arrival. The Monowai had nearly 300 passengers on board when she entered the harbour, and a contingent numbering about 82 joined the ship at this port They are all excursionists, and many hail from Sydney and Melbourne, but the majority came from the North Island. Fifty-two tourists booked passages at Dunedin and 30 came from Christchurch, Timaru, and Oamaru. These arrived by the north express as the Monowai was berthing. The express stopped at the Port Chalmers station, and the travellers were on board the liner half an hour later. The t Monowai is a full ship, there being no vacant berths. The vessel has become so popular on these cruises that the whole of the accommodation for this cruise was booked several weeks ago. Applications for berths were received at practically every branch office of the Union Company almost to the last day, and fully 150 intending tourists could not be accommodated. ■ Following on her fast passage from Sydney, completed at Wellington on Monday morning, the Monowai made the run from the northern port to Port Chalmers in 21$ hours. Captain A. H. Davey informed a Daily Times reporter that the trip from Wellington was made under adverse weather conditions, strong northr west, south-west, and then north-east winds prevailing all the way. The wind was very strong from Banks Peninsula, and the ship was delayed in berthing after she was turned off the George street wharf. She reached the harbour on schedule time, being within 50 yards of her berth at 4 p.m., but the wind, striking the vessel full on the port quarter, kept her straining on the lines for fully half an hour, and it was 4.45 p.ffi. before she was safely moored. , The Monowai sailed shortly after 6 p.m. on her cruise to the West Coast Sounds. She will steam through.all the sounds and then up the West Coast to Wellington. Arriving, at the northern port on Friday morning, the Monowai will sail at 3 p.m. the same day for Sydney. .
