HENRV V 111... . a*;., . . ~4FROM HOLBEIN TO MOVIES m mi A /pHE remarkable resemblance A of Charles Laughton* one of •Greenland's outstanding character actors, to the oft-married Henry VIU has been further accentuated by the recent discovery of a hitherto unknown portrait of the English monarch by. Ham Holbein. Em* years* a dispatch reveals, %he portrait has hung unnoticed in Castle Howard, the seat of the Hon. Geoffrey Howard. Four old but distinct coats of -over-point were removed to dis'dose what has been, termed the finest and most intimate likeness of the King in existence. Acclaimed one of Holbein’s greatest masterpieces, it bears clear trace&of the famous Court Painter’s signature and of the date 1542. The discovery of the painting at the present time has proven of particular interest because Laughton portrays the role of the monarch in “The Private Life of Henry VIU”, a United Artists release. When Laughton grew a beard for the picture, critics, hastened to point out that his portraits were almost duplicates of Holbein’s other paintings. The new Holbein and Laughton as Henry VIII are both shown above, indicating the uncanny resemblance. “The Private Life' of Henry VIII” has been ac-j claimed one of the outstanding motion pictures of all time, both from a historical and an entertainment point of view,' with Laughton’s performance' setting a new high mark in subtle histrionics.
