SEVENTY-ONE TEAKS AGO.
The escort from the diggings, due to-day, will bring down 8,538 oz 10 dwts from the Dunstan. .... , , _ The first ordinary meeting of the Dunedin Gas Light and Coke Company, was to'have been held at the Imperial Hotel yesterday afternoon, but there being no attendance of ' shareholders the meeting lapsed. . . , The road from Dunedin to Waikouaiti is officially declared to be open for traffic as far as Blueskin Bay, A rather serious accident happened to Cobb and Co.’s Dunstan Coach, which should have arrived in Dunedin about midnight on Wednesday. As we hear, there were 16 passengers, and the driver was Sheppard, one of Cobb’s best and most careful drivers. The passengers included Mr St. John Branigan, commissioner of police, Sergeant Trunible, and a mounted constable, who had in charge two prisoners, Charles and James Gilbert, “mates” of the notorious Gardiner, who were captured at the Dunstan; and also Captain Anderson and Mr M’Leod, About three o’clock on Wednesday afternoon the coach reached the brow of the hill above the Deep Stream, at Campbell Thompson’s. The few hours’ rain had made the roads in that neighbourhood frightfully heavy, and on petting to a siding at the top of the hill named the off hind wheel snapped, and the coach went bodily over, pitching out the whole of the occupants. Most fortunately the injuries sustained were very slight. Sheppard suffere'd the most, getting an ankle sprained, and being a good deal cut and bruised; but although most of the passengers were more or less hurt, there was nothing like serious injury, none escaping less harmed than did the two handcuffed prisoners. . . ,
