AMATEUR CYCLING

EVENING MEETING The weekly meeting of the Dunedin Amateur .Cycling Club was held at the Caledonian Ground last evening under ideal conditions. The first of a series of thrjee races open to junior riders for the Paul Cup was won by W. Sivcrtscn, who rode a nicely judged race to. win by a length from E. Richardson. Sivertsen also won the Half-mile Handicap, points for which count for the President's Cup. The main event of the meeting was the Ten Mile A Grade Club Championship, which was won by G. Smith. Pacemakers wei - e used in this race, and, with Foster keeping them moving, a solid pace was set the whole way. With three laps to go the field had dwindled down to three riders. At the bottom bend in the last lap the placed men were riding in a bunch. In a good finish Smith came through to win by two lengths from J. , Kewish, who was 10 yards ahead of G. Foster. The 220 Yards Handicap was won by G. H.' Geddes, of Timaru, who ran well to win by a yard. The following are the results: — 220 YARDS HANDICAP. G. H. Geddes (3yds) .. .. 1 E. Ashby (14yds) , .. ~ 2 J. Gerken (Byds). .. .. 3 Five started. Won by a yard, with a similar distance between second and! third. CYCLING EVENTS. ONE MILE JUNIOR HANDICAP (Paul Cup). W. Sivertsen (20yds) .;... 1 . E. Richardson (65yds) .. 2 B. Oakes (35yds) .. .... 3 Six started. At the bell the field was bunched. Going down the back Sivertsen went to the front, followed by Laws and Oakes. In a good finish Sivertsen held his lead to win by a length. Half a wheel separated second and third. Time, 2min 22sec. HALF-MILE HANDICAP (President's Cup). First heat: G. Sinclair (40yds) 1, B. Oakes (70yds) 2, W. Sivertsen (55yds) 3. Four started. At the bell Sivertsen led Oakes and Sinclair, with Lucas 10 yards back. Oakes led into the straight, and went on to win by half a length. Sivertsen was 10 yards back third. Time, lmin 5 2-ssec. Second heat: A. Hughes (100yds) 1, C. Gilchrist (25yds) 2, V. Laws (80yds) 3. Four started. Hughes made the best of his handicap, and at the bell led Laws by 20 yards, with Gilchrist a similar distance back. Gilchrist moved up going down the back stretch and finished 15 yards behind tho winner. Time, lmin 0 LSsec. Final. W. Sivertsen 1 B. Oakes 2 G. Sinclair 3 With a lap to go Hughes led the. field by 20 yards. Sivertsen led into the straight, and went on to win by two lengths, with Sinclair two and a-half lengths back, third. Time) lmin Csec. TEN-MILE CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. (A Grade). G. Smith 1 J. Kewish 2G. Foster .. ~. 3 Eight started. The pace was on from the start. With 25 laps to go Lucas was forced to retire, and with six laps to go the order was Smith', Kewish, Gilchrist, and Foster. Three laps later Kewish led Foster and Smith, and at the bell the order was unchanged. Smith moved up going down the back, and led into the straight. In a good finish he won by two lengths, 10 yards separating second and third. Time, 24min 47sec.
