BAND CONTEST
QUICKSTEP COMPETITION ST. KILDA SUCCESSFUL FIRST IN DRILL AND MUSIC (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 24. Magnificent marching and fine playing won for the St. Kilda Municipal Band the A Grade military display and Quickstep at Athletic Park on Saturday. Twenty-two bands, 11 in the A Grade and 11 in the B Grade, competed during the afternoon, and treated the crowd of between 10.000 and 12,000 to a splendid exhibition of precise manoevring, the work of some of the A Grade bands being very spectacular. St. Kilda gained highest points both for music and marching, being 4i points ahead of the nest band, Invercargill Civic, which won the contest last year. Invercargill’s marching was quite as good as, if not better, than St. Kilda’s, but this band lost valuable marks through setting too fast a pace. v The B Grade contest was won by Wellington Boys’ Institute, which gained a clear-cut win over Southland Battalion and Westport Municipal.
