THE Otago Daily Times. "Inveniam viam aut faciam.” DUNEDIN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 1863. Shipping Intelligence.

SEVENTY-ONE YEARS AGO.

PORT CHALMERS, February 25. : The barque Bella Vista, which was towed up in the morning by the Favorite, has already discharged her horses. .. . . The barque Aurifera brought her freight of horses with a loss of onlv two. . . . The Omega was towed up in the afternoon by the Samson, and had her 156 passengers at once conveyed to town. . . . The ship Samuel Appleton, which was off the Heads in the morning, sailed up in the evening, and will proceed immedP ately to discharge her freight of 182 horses. ... We have been favorodwith a perusal of a letter from a scientific man, a Swiss, who ig working as a miner on the Arrow. . . . The writer says that his claim is nearly worked out; but he has gotifrom it for'his own share 200 oz. ~ . “As to the permanence of these diggings,” the writer concluded, “ I am confident that they will be worked for years and years, sluicing being the predominant mode of work.” At last, the work of levelling and permanently forming the roadway of the Princes-street cutting is actually to be commenced. Mr Dempsey, whose tender was accepted by the Town Board, and approved by the Provincial Government, signed the contract yesterday; and to-day, as we understand, his men will begin operations. ... We observe that tenders will be received at the office of tire Provincial Secretary for the metalling of about sixty-five chains of the road from Dunedin to Portobello. ... The last report from the Warden in charge of the Tuapeka Gold Field, dated February 21st, represents the population of the District of Gabriel’s at 850, of whom about half are miners. Water was still scarce, but those miners who were able to work were doing remarkably well. The Ballarat Star of February 11 says:—A lecture upon the Maories, or aborigines of New Zealand, was delivered on Monday night, in Wesley Church, Lydiard-street, by the Rev. James Buffer, twenty years a missionary in New Zealand, the object of the lecture being to raise funds in aid of the erection or, clearing from debt of a Wesleyan Church in Dunedin. ... WAKATIPU GOLD REPORT. Mr G. A. Welsh, Gold Broker, Queenstown, reports:— That the gold market has been much brisker during the past fortnight, which/ in a measure, is to be attributed to the fact that the Banks rose the price to £3 12s Od. But at present not one third of the gold raised on this field is sold here, the miners preferring to remit it to Dunedin, preparatory to taking it either to. Victoria or the Home Country for disposal, they thinking that they cun obtain a much higher price by doing so. I was shown yesterday a splendid nugget of solid gold (weighing Soz 12dwts 13grs), by a party of miners who sold me a large parcel of very rough gold. They would not sell the nugget at the present rate, nor state where they obtained it, but said that there were larger ones in the possession of some miners working at the same place.
