(From Oor, Own Correspondent.) ' BALCLUTHA; February 25. In the semi-final of the Knock-out Cup played at Balclutha yesterday. Balclutha easily defeated Kaitangata. Batting first Balclutha compiled the useful total of 175 runs. The chief scorers were Henderson 168'' and T. Gold (40). Duncan (14), Lennox (12). and I. Stewart (12) also reached double figures. Colbourne. (five for 56) was the best bowler for Kaitangata, next coming Parker (two for 62) and M'Millan. l (one for l). In reply to Balclutha’s total Kaitangata made only 32. Golbourne’s 6 was the top score. Lennox took six wickets for 12 runs, while Boddington. secured an average, of three for 13. Balclutha will meet Milburn next Saturday in the final of the cup.' ■■ _' High, School Old Boys had an easy win over Owaka on the school ground. Old Boys, batting first, made 291, for four wickets, and Owaka 127 for'nine wickets. For Old Boys Guest made the fine total of 114 and Green 92. Scores: Guest, c Finlayson, b M'Lelland. 114;. South Otago High School defeated a team from the Southland Boys’ High School at cricket by 83 runs to 41 on the first innings.. Teams of boys from these schools also , met at lawn tennis, but the Southland boys had an easy win, BOWLING. Balclutha sent five 1 rinks to Kaitangata yesterday; the Kditangata team winning by two points. ■ ■ . : 1 ;- v ■
FREEZING WORKERS’ PICNIC- -- The annual- picnic -bif -the- employees of the Finegand freezing works was held yesterday at Cockburn’s, Whitelea, not far from the : mouth of the KaiKiku Stream. There was a long discussion on the subject of the present method of selling wool, and it was eventually decided to write to the Duhefiin Association congratulating if on. -the improvement already in evidence, and to ask if it were possible: to devise a still better system of selling wool, under a System of uniform grading. • ■ - ■ • , . . A discussion took place on tree planting and the value of afforestation on poor Crown .lands, especially when adjacent to railways. It was resolved te write tb the Unemployment Board asking .it to start a scheme of this nature. . ' It was decided'..to frame a remit to the Otago Provincial Executive in reference to the unemployment levy pn wages and to communicate' with- the- Minister of Employment.
