FOUNDERS* DAY SERVICE GATHERING AT TOWN HALL, - In order to celebrate in a fitting manner the birthdays of Lord and Lady BadenPowell, founders of the Boy Scout and Girl Guide Movements, a Founders’ Day service was held yesterday in the Town Hall./ The Mayor (the Rev, E. T. Cox) presided. Guides, Scouts, and. Cubs were present in large numbers, and there was also a fair attendance of. the public. An inspiring address on discipline was given by the Very Rev. G. C. Cruickshank, Dean of Dunedin. Before the service the colours were presented by three Boy Scouts, on behalf of the Scouts, and by three Girl Guides, on behalf of the Guides, the colours of the former being received by the Mayor and those of the latter by Dean Cruickshank. On the platform were Misses V. M. Barron (provincial commissioner), J. Hay (provincial secretary), D. G. Blackmore (district commissioner for Dunedin), H. Wilson (district captain), and M. Taylor (“Laughing Owl”), representing the Girl Guides, and Assistant Metropolitan Commissioner A. Martin, Commissioner C. H, Wing, Commissioner C. E. Richards (Gentral Otago), and Commissioner T. D. B. Paterson, representing the Boy Scouts. Mr A. Newton acted as organist. AWARD FOR BRAVERY. SPECIAL ORDER OF MERIT. (Per United Press Association.) TIMARU, February 25. •In common with other centres, Boy Scouts and Girl Guides here attended a special service this afternoon in commemoration of the birthdays of the founders of the Movements, Lord and Lady Baden-Powell. Opportunity was also taken by the Guide commissioner for the district to present a special order of merit forwarded from London to Lilian Hill, of St. Mary’s Guides, for*the rescue of a child in danger of drowning. This is one of the first awards of this order made in New Zealand. The rescue was made nearly two years ago, but 12 months elapsed before a report was sent to London, and the award Jias just come to hand. The service was largely attended by the public.
