CRICKET

THREE CENTURIES SCORED KAIKORAFS LARGE TOTAL NIMMO PERFORMS “ HAT TRICK ” The outstanding feature of the play in. the senior cricket competition on Saturday was a score of 328 for five wickets made by Kaikorai against Christian Brothers. Three centuries were scored during the day. Ditchfield “ carried his bat ” in Dunedin’s innings against Carisbrook, big score being 117. For Grange, Chettlcburgh scored 116, and M‘Knight made 109 for Kaikorai. M'Knight was associated in a fine opening partnership with R. Cherry, whose score was 71. For Carisbrook, Nimmo performed the“hat trick,” but the outstanding bowling performances of the day were that of Silver, who took six for 27 for Albion against University, and Cameron, who took seven Albion wickets for 71. Payne, bowling for Old Boys against Grange, secured an average of five for 40. GRANGE v. OLD BOYS Grange had first use of the fast wicket in its match against High School Old Boys at the North Ground. The innings was opened by Knight and Dey, the former playing two uppish shots in Dickinson’s second over. In each case a fieldsman got a hand on the ball and each time it went to the boundary. Dey went Ibw with the score at 14, and Knight was brilliantly caught by Clark behind the wickets when the total was 34. Chettleburgh and Elmea then became associated in a partnership during which they gave an attractive display of free bitting, adding 76 to the score in half an hour. Elmes was dismissed after scoring 35 with the first ball bowled by Payne, who soon afterwards had Galland Ibw, and then clean bowled Knowles and Chadwick. When Tomkinson joined Chettlcburgh and settled down to play a valuable fighting inpings six wickets were down for 158. At the tea adjournment Chet-i tleburgh’s score was 91, and ho quickly reached the century on the resumption after batting for 109 minutes, but with his score at 116 he lifted a ball from Dickinson to long on, where Giles accepted the catch. Chettlcburgh had played a chanceless innings occupying 123 minutes, and his score included 19 fours. Tomkinson, who had stayed with Chettleburgh while 47 were added to the total, quickly followed, and Boyd also had. a brief stay, but Lemin and Ledgerwood, in a productive last wicket stand, carried the total to 256. Payne secured the excellent figures'of five for 40. Old Boys’ innings opened as brightly as did that of Grange. While Saxton played carefully Gale vigorously attacked the bowling. Their partnership yielded 77 runs and ended when Gale, after batting for only 43 minutes for 55 runs, including nine fours, was caught in the outfield by Elmes. At the drawing of stumps Old Boys’ had scored 93 without further loss. Scores: — GRANGE. First Innings. DUNEDIN v. CARISBROOK A "hat trick” by Nimmo and an attractive century by Ditchfield were the features of the Dunedin-Carisbrook match, which was commenced at Carisbrook. With the wicket in good condition, Dunedin won the toss and elected to bat, Ditchfield and Cavanagh opening against Nimmo s bowling. Ditchfield settled down quietly to play a very attractive innings of 117 not out. After 19 minutes play Cavanagh, who had reached 11, went out Ibw to a good ball from D. Cameron. Ditchfield continued to add runs. At 42 he gave the only chance in a very steady innings, but Botting, behind the stumps, missed the catch. The third man, Noble, was caught by Procter off D. Cameron at 7. Torrance had scored 19 when he was clean howled by Nimmo, and Claridge went cheaply for 3. . Carisbrook lost more than one chance in the field. Runs came slowly. Ditchfield received good support from Valentine, who added 21, and his score had reached 89 when his partner was caught by Botting oS Nimmo. The next man was Cranston, whom Nimmo dismissed for none with a good straight ball. Excitement was tense when Douglas came in to face Nimmo, but the bowler succeeded in completing his ‘ hat trick ” by taking off the bails with another fast one. M‘Gavin and White remained to hold up the tail and help Ditchfield to make the extra 10 runs he required for his century. M'Gavin was equal to the task, and Ditchfield passed his 100 with the total at 184. When M'Gavin had reached 13 he was stumped by Betting. Ditchfield continued to play well, his total including 14 fours. Many of his strokes were neatly placed between the fieldsmen. After White had been run out for 6 the innings closed for 213 runs. Cox and D. Cameron opened for Carisbrook, the former facing Douglas. Cox had reached 22 when stumps were drawn, with the total at 36. The scores were as .follows: — DUNEDIN. First Innings. WELLINGTON CENTURY TO ALLEN RILEY BOWLS WELL. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, February 25. In beautiful weather and on < a perfect ground Canterbury improved an already favourable position yesterday in the cricket match against Wellington, heading Wellington’s total by 44 runs, and then dismissing the northern province for 196. There were some very bright patches of batting, and a notable bowling performance was recorded by Riley. It was apparent that Canterbury would get a first innings lead, notwithstanding Wellington’s good total of 305. The first partnership of the day practically assured this, for the Allen-Hadlee combination, which had made 27 on the first day, carried on-.and added 161. Allen was unorthodox but very effective in both defensive and scoring strokes, but Hadlee played a staid and careful innings, which, nevertheless, was stylish and sound. ' He was always master of the bowling, and was unlucky in failing to reach his centUlh Wellington’s second innings there was only one bright performance, Tindill’s knock standing out as a bright spot in an otherwise drab display. He played beautiful cricket, and he alone of the side made the bowling look easy. Riley had a bowling triumph. He bowled unchanged for 26 overs, which was eloquent testimony to his steadiness. He kept a good length, with a nippy break and variation of pace. The following are the scores: — WELLINGTON. First Innings SOS Second Innings.
