YOUNG WOMEN’S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION
BOARD OF DIRECTORS The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Young Womens’ Christian Association was held on Wednesday afternoon, there being present: Mesdames GM. Begg (in the chair), H. D. Skinner, W. J. Porteous, H. K. Wilkinson, F. B. Adams, T. Somerville, H. Price, J. Sutherland Ross, Blackmore; and the Misses M. Black, L. Sullivan, M. Begg, and the secretary. The secretary reported on the business transacted by the December executive meeting, and particularly in connection with the acceptance, with regret, of the resignation of Miss J, Shepherd as submatron of the hostel. Miss Shepherd’s duties would terminate in the middle of March, when the matron returned from her annual leave. Among the correspondence were seasonal greetings from a number of sister associations, both in New Zealand and overseas. The national general secretary had written in connection with the Easter Conference to be .held at Paraparaumu. The programme was to include group studies on the “ Principles of Creative Citizenship,” led by Mis 3 Black, the principal of Archerfield; “The Business Women’s World,” and “Pathways to Certainty”; technical hours when the purpose and place of the Y.W.C.A, among women’s movements, its methods and the scope of its membership, together with constitutions for the round table clubs and business girls’ Jyceum, would be discussed; addresses by Mr Walter Nash, M.P.. and the Rev. Dorothy Wilson. The following subjects for debate had been suggested: (1) That charity is demoralising to character. (2) That the kinema has not been for the benefit of the community. (3) That sport fills 100 large a place in modern life. The matter of delegates was discussed, Mrs Sutherland Ross, Miss M. Black, and three members of staff being definitely appointed, while appointment of suitable girl members were left in the hands of the secretary. The resignation of Mrs H. M'Allum was received with regret, and a minute recording her valuable services over a long period was passed. The secretary reported on the activities for the last two months. Miss Jean Stevenson had visited Dunedin for a few days in the middle of December, and had met a number of committees, having helped with the inauguration of the Sports Council, as well as having conferred very fully with staff members on the promotion of their departments. Practically all staff members had now had their annual holiday, and it was a noteworthy fact that although for some weeks there were only two members on duly, it was possible to keep the cafeteria open during the whole of January, and no extra assistance was required except in the matter of a charwoman on four occasions. Mrs Grey, of the Australian National Board had visited the association, and a number of visitors from other parts of New Zealand had paid brief visits. Matters in connection with Street Day were further discussed, and certain members volunteered to assist in various ways. Miss L. Sullivan was appointed treasurer in place of Mrs Barrowclough. The departmental reports, national and world news, concluded the meeting.
