OBITUARY

MR JESSE HAYME3 The death occurred yesterday morning after a brief illness of Mr Jesse Haymef, aged '7B years. Mr Haymes was for many years one of the most prominent figures in trades unionism in Dunedin and up to the time of his death he continued to take an active interest in the affairs of workers. Born at Coventry, England, he came to New Zealand when about 20 years of age, and followed Ihe occupation of a carter for some time. He then became interested in the Labour movement, and was one of the first *o undertake the work of organising trade unions in this city. In the early days

he was a member of the Organising Committee of the Otago Trades and Labour Council, and in that capacity he was in charge of much of the work of organisation of unions. When these were established, he continued to show his interest by acting as secretary of several of the new unions. He was for many years a member and also held the office of president of the Trades and Labour Council and was a member of the Workers' Political Committee, which functioned in the early days of Labour and Liberalism in Dunedin. Later be was associated with the Independent Political Labour League, and he linked up with every organisation which he believed was calculated to promote the interests of the workers. He was the oldest permanent trade union secretary in Otago and one of the oldest in the Dominion. For a number of years he represented the employees' unions on the Board of- Managers of King Edward Technical College. His ability and popalarity are attested by the fact that he enjoyed the confidence of various unions over a very lengthy period. At the time of his death Mr Haymes was secretaiy of the Tramways, Bakers', Engine Drivers', Furniture Workers', Brush and Broom Workers' and Shipwrights' Unions. He was also president of the Labour Day Association and was a prominent member of the Order of Druids.. Mr Haymes is survived by his widow and a grown-up family.

MR J. M. LIGHTFOOT i ■ • ■ (Per United Press Association.) BLENHEIM, February 22. Private advice has been received 1m Blenheim of the death at Auckland of Mr J. M. Lightfoot, formerly Blenheim manager of the Bank of New South Wales. The deceased was formerly presl- ■ dent of the Marlborough Patriotic Association, and president .qf the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce and other bodies. He retired in 1929 after 31 years as manager in various branches, and he toured England and tbe Continent before taking up his residence at Auckland. He is survived by his. widow and one daughter, who resides in Melbourne. MRS E. W. KANE (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 22. The death is announced of Mrs E. W. Kane, J.P., at Lewisham Hospital, after a brief illness. She was formerly the wife of Mr F. E. Baume, M.P., of Auckland, who -died in 1910. She married Mr Kane in 1921. She once stood for Parliament while in Auckland, and polled well. She took a very active part in public life in Auckland, arfd after her arrival in Wellington soon became known as a woman of high attainments. She became a member of the Wellington College Board of Governors, and revived the National Council of Women. As a J.P. she took a keen interest in the affairs of the association. She brought up three sons. One is the editor of the Sydney Sun, one is sub-editor of the Launcestjii Examiner, and one is in the radio busy ness in Sydney. MR GEORGE WITTERS GISBORNE, February 22. The death is announced of Mr Georg* Witters, sheep farmer, a prominent local body member, after a long illness.
