Travellers who are reaching Calcutta from Tibet state that there are reports in Lhasa that the Dalai Lama died in December in mysterious circumstances, as a sequel to which a rich and* influential Tibetan official who was a great favourite of the Dalai Lama, was arrested with his aged father. It is stated that the Dalai Lama's illness was kept the closest secret. The arrested official prevented anyone—even highest ecclesiastical authorities—from seeing him.
