CHARGE OF ASSAULT
YOUNG MAN REMANDED WOMAN'S ALARMING EXPERIENCE . A resident of Maori Hill, Mrs Butler, is understood to have been the victim of a sensational assault on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs Butler, who was alone in the house, heard a ring at the front door, but on answering the call found no one there. She then went to the back door, and noticed that the washhouse door, which she had previously closed, was standing ajar. She entered the washhouse, and it is alleged that immediately a garment was thrown over her head, and she was dragged from the washhouse to the scullery, where she was locked in. It ia stated that her assailant then ransacked the house. Inquiries were made the same evening by Detectives Gibson and Marsh, with the result that a young man named Henry Esson Mathieson was arrested. He appeared before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M., in the City Police Court yesterday morning on a charge of assaulting Jessie Rennie Butler with intent to rob her. Chief Detective Doyle applied for a remand until to-day, as Mrs Butler wag still in bed suffering from shock. The remand was granted.
