Believed to the be last survivor of the Itombi River massacre, when 100 men were ambushed by 4000 Zulus, Corporal John Poole, of Spring Lodge, Wrexham, died at his home the other day, aged 81. Corporal Poole, who was formerly, in the South Staffordshire Regiment, was one of nine men who escaped. He swam the flooded Itombi River, and later rejoined his battalion.
