Two specimens of black spitting cobra, which arrived at the Zoological Gardens, London, recently from Southern Xigcria, should command rather more than the usual respect accorded to poisonous serpents. For these new arrivals can not only bit, but also spit their deadly poi>on for some yards. When annoyed ths reptile tilts back its head and ejects through hollow teeth two hair-thin streams of venomous fluid. At the London Zoo the fluid may be seen to strike and slowly trickle down the irbtss front of the case. Should the poison enter a cut death is probable unless immediate preventive steps are taken. The reptile seems to have an uncanny knack of aiming at the victim's eyes, and keepers wear motor coggles when opening the cages.
