GAS AND ELECTRIC COOKERS

TO THE EDITOR. Sib, —I notice the Mayor is proposing to invite tenders for 1000 electric ranges. I wonder if he realises that the effect of doing so will be to create further unemployment. He is going to throw out of permanent employment 10 to" 12 men. 1 am in perfect agreement with Cr Campbell that there is no more economical method of cooking than the coal range. We get cooking, heating of water, destructor, and the current of fresh air tor health purposes. Then the corporation receives the ash for filling up waste land and making it available for building purposes. I am very much mistaken if the contents of the garbage tins that have to be emptied by the ashman are not going to sustain the'rats. All the filth, should be consumed by the range. There is nothing in the ash bucket at my home but ashes, bottles, and tins, so that we have no' flies, rats, or mice. A. great many people would welcome the return of the coal range. We hear some great tales about the cost of electricity, but side by side with the electric or gas cooker burning continually the coal range will beat them out of sight. I say from experience that the coal range is by far the most economical device that we have ever had. and any one who is not afraid to empty a few ashes and clean the range and thus test the matter for himself will agree. I would advise all those who intend putting in these devices to look before they leap.—l am, etc., Practical.
