GOLD AT KAKA POINT
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— ln yesterday’s Daily" Times I noticed’ a paragraph containing news of a gold strike at Kaba Point near the' mouth of the Molyneux River. After reading about this and other strikes that 'have been made on the banks of this famous river, between its mouth and Island Block, one feels convinced that there must be large deposits of gold in the riverbed for practically the whole extent of this area. These strikes give proof to the statements made by the geologists when they described the Clutha Valley as having been scooped out by a glacier which, started high up in the mountain tops, and left extensive gold-bearing deposits'on Us course. For centuries past these deposits have been induced by weather and water, and now form the alluvial deposits which ore being won from this river and the Adjoining flats. As gold is being found on both banks of the river, on the islands in the river, and at the river mouth, there can be no disputing the fact that theie iq good gold all the way along this water course. I recently saw prospects taken from the banks of the river which ran as high as 6s to the cubic yard, and have no doubt that the riverbed itself, which is on a-still lower level, must contain values at least as high. Now that this etrike has been made at-the very mem™, of tlie river —and it is a fact that lor the last 60 years men have been obtaining payable gold on the beaches, near the mouth —one wonders that move attention is not being paid,by- mining men to tus river, which in the past has yielded such large quantities of etc.^
