A new situation has arisen regarding the smuggling of banned books from Ulster to the Irish Free State, It was recently revealed that this “ racket ” was on the increase, and that the smugglers were adopting the ruse of removing the original wrapper from the banned book and substituting a “harmless” one. The trick has been overcome by the Customs officials, who now examine the inside pages of each volume carried by a traveller or passing through the post. Consequently people who have no intention of breaking the law are often found with banned works in their possession as they cross the border, and the books arc confiscated.
