Women’s feet are getting bigger, according to observations in England. Shoemakers who hitherto regarded size four as a fair average now find size five more popular. According to the Sunday Times this is one of the secrets revealed at the recent International Shoe and Leather Fair. “ Out of every 10 shoes sold in Britain four are of size five," an official stated. The official added that, with the exception of the United States, Great Britain was the best-shod country in the world. “We buy more shoes a foot than other countries, and during the last six years there has been an increase in the number bought by women. The average is six pairs a year.” Good feet for good shoes is one of the objects of the exhibition. Shoemakers are realising that however good are the leather and lasts they afford no comfort unless the feet for which they are fashioned are in good trim.
