(From Our Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON. December 13. PROFICIENCY EXAMINATION. The following is the result of the proficiency examination at the Palmerston District High School. Out of a class of 27, 24 obtained proficiency and two competency. Proficiency.—Capstick, James; Earley, William Thomas; Hitchcock, Keith William; Hudson, Robert Richard; Jones, Joshua M'Laren; Kerse, Donald Bensen; Shaw, John; Pope, Rendle Kelway; Sutherland, Noel; Whittleston, Harold; Andrews, Nettie; Badman, Elsie Winifred; Burrow, Margaret Mary; Colvin, Muriel Jessie; Cullinan, Nancy Ann; Dickson, Edna Mary; Jones, Gladys Mabel; Jull, Kathleen Mary; M'Leod, Ailsa Lucy; Moore, Grace Evelyn; Moore, Jean Letitia; Smith, Grace Ray; Sharp, Myrtle Ivy; Thomas, Phyllis Worthly. Competency.—Parkhill, John Craig; Thomas, Theodore Felstead. LAWN TENNIS. A meeting of the committee of the Palmerston Lawn Tennis Club was held last night, the president (the Rev. C. Melville Newton) presiding over a good attendance. The Madhatters’ Christmas Dance had shown a profit of £8 4s fid. Accounts totalling £l9 (ball accounts £lB 12s) were passed for payment. The president remarked on the great assistance the lady members had given in connection with the ball. It was decided to have two challenge lists put up in the pavilion, one for ladies and one for men.
Defending the Mixed Doubles Silver Buttons, G. W. Thomson and Miss M. Sheppard beat N. M. Matheson and Miss L. Aitken by 41 points to 34 after a good game. The challengers received 6 in the handicapping.
