MOSGIEL BOROUGH COUNCIL
A special meeting of the Mosgiel Borough Council was held last night. Mr A. F, Quelch (Mayor) presided, and Crs R. Smeaton, W. P. Hartstonge, G. Smith, E. J. Wilson, J. F. Frew and A. Stevens were present. The balance sheet for the year ended March 31, 1033, was received back from th audit office, certified correct, with no tags attached.—The customary resolution was passed, and the Mayor was authorised to sign.. The chairman of the Finance Committee : congratulated the clerk on the fact that no tags were attached. The Mayor endorsed this remark. , It was decided to have copies printed. The Minister of Internal Affairs acknowledged the council’s letter relating to the 1 * proposals to constitute the Borough of Mosgiel and the City of Dunedin as a united, fire district. The council’s letter stated that the council was in accord with the proposal suggested but could see many difficulties from the other bodies interested. In order, to expedite matters and have the fire Brigade better equipped as soon as possible, the council was quite agreeable to the arrangement arrived at with the Dune'din, Fire Board and hoped that the Minister might see his way to approve of the arrangement until such time as the Act was amended. The Minister’s first letter asked the Council to consider the proposal contained in the report from the Inspector of Fire Brigades for the formation of a United Fire District to include the districts of the adjoining local authorities, in lieu of that contained in a previous letter which referred to Dunedin City and Mosgiel only. The inclusion of more districts should result in the reduction of the-total contributions of the municipalities.—The correspondence was received. The superintendent of the Mosgiel Fire Brigade wrote with regard to the practice' of parking cars in front of Coronation Hall and of leaving bicycles in the roadway at the side of the hall.—lt was decided to form parking areas in other parts of Gordon road so as to prevent cars "being parked in the places complained of. The matter of the bicycles! was referred to the General Committee. An invitation was extended .by the local association football club to. the Mayor and councillors to a Christmas cheer function to the children of the unemployed at the Queen’s Park on December 16 at 2 p.m.—Received with thanks. ALLOCATION TO UNEMPLOYED. Cr Hartstonge referred to the reduction in the allocation for the unemployed. He moved that the Municipal Association be asked to make a protest on behalf of the municipalities of New Zealand against these reductions. —Cr Frew seconded the motion, which was carried.
