Scenes of religious fervour such as only Naples can stage -were lately being enacted in that city. The famous “ Living Virgin,” the statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which left Naples over 111 years ago, was allowed by the Pope to return for a few days before being taken to the Holy Land. Naples abandoned its ordinary pursuits to honour the statue, which is considered one. of the most miraculous in the world. Thousands of people visited it. Lame, blind, and other sick persona were driven up in all kinds of conveyances, from luxurious motor cars with liveried chauffeurs and footmen to the shabby Neapolitan coster-carts drawn by scraggy horses and mules. The occupants, of all classes, prostrated themselves at the foot of the statue to pray for health.
