SWIMMING CARNIVAL

CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ SCHOOL

The annual swimming carnival of the Christian Brothers High School was held in the Municipal Baths last night, when there was n good attendance of supporters of the school. Under the capable management of Bros. Brophy, Ryan, and Boylan, a very lengthy programme was run off with little loss of time. The_ outstanding competitor was J. O’Driscoll, who broke three records during the evening. In the 33 1-3 yards championship O’Driscoll beat the previous record of 18 l-ssec by 1 4-ssec. A little later he covered 66 2-3 yards in 38 4-ssec, beating his own record by four seconds, and he finished the evening with a wonderful effort in the 100 yards championship, his time for which was 62 4-ssec, against his own existing record of 72 2-ssec. O’Driscoll also won the senior championship with 18 points, J. Barry with 14 points being second. The championship under 15 was won by T. Wallace with 20 points, M. O’Connell being next with 12. During the evening an exhibition of breaststroke swimming was given by Reg. Geddes, the New Zealand intermediate breaststroke champion and the New Zealand record-holder. Geddes swam three lengths, the first in the “ grandfather’s ” style, the second modern style, and the third fast style. In the last length he gave some indication of his speed when fully extended, and was heartily applauded for his effort. An exhibition of diving by Geddes and P. Mathieson was also greatly appreciated. J. O’Driscoll and J. Blacklock. two members of the school life saving team which won the secondary schools life saving shield for 1933, gave a demonstration of the first and fourth methods of life saving. Results: —, .
