AMATEUR ATHLETICS

EVENING MEETING The weekly sports meeting of the Otago Centre, N.Z.A.A.A., was held last evening at the Caledonian Grounds before a poor attendance. All the events drew good entries, and it was necessary to run two heats in the Relay Race. The Ladies’ 100 Yards Handicap was won by Miss B. Dick off the scratch mark. From a good start she finished fast over the last 20 yards to win by a foot from Miss N. Rout. The 100 Yards Handicap, which drew a field of 30 starters, provided a close finish in the final, A. Clark winning by inches from A. B. Thomson, with K. Taihot close up. In the One Mile the limit men made the best of their handicap. L. M'Millan, off 150 yards, having a popular win in the fast time of 4mm 23sec. The following are the results; — 100 YARDS HANDICAP. First Heat. —A. Clark (9yds) 1, A. B. Thomson (2yds) 2. W. Pettet (4yds) 3. Nine starters. Won by three yards, two yards separating second and third. Time, 10 l-ssec. Second Heat—K. Talbot (2yds) 1, W. A. Black (syds) 2, B. Orange (7yds) 3. Eight starters. Eight starters. Leading from the start, Davie was 30 yards ahead of the next competitor at the bell, and went on to win by 20 yards. At the belll M‘Millan fed Ellis and Brown, with the rest of the field strung out, Craig, the virtual scratch man, was running well, but was unable to get up with the held. Going down the back Chettleburgh improved his position, and coming into the straight was 10 yards behind. M Mil lan, who finished well .to win by four yards. Kirkwood was six yards back third.
