Vice-regal. The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) and Lady Bledisloe paid their first visit to North Canterbury on Saturday (says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch), visiting Amberley, Waikari, and Culverden on their way to Hanmer, where they will attend the jubilee of the opening of the famous springs. Lord Bledisloe was given a warm welcome at the townships visited. _ At Hanmer Springs yesterday a special service was held in the open air, at which his Excellency read the lesson. The town is gaily decorated for the jubilee, and the celebrations will begin to-day. Ministerial. Mr R. Masters, Minister of Education and Minister of Industries and Commerce, arrived in Dunedin on Saturday afternoon, accompanied by his private secretary (Mr W. I. Deavoll). He was met at the Railway Station by Messrs J. Wallace (chairman of the Otago Education Board), J. Hogg (president of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association), J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., W. B. Taverner, E. Sheed, and others, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. To-day the Minister will inspect a number of factories, and this evening he will give an address at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Manufacturers’ Association. The Minister will have a short conference with the Otago Education Board to-morrow morning, after which he will return to the north by the mid-day express. Mr R. W. Gibbs, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, left by the through express on Saturday on his return to Wellington. Mr D. Hunter left by the express on Saturday on his way to Auckland. Mr T. C. Brash, secretary of the Dairy Control Board, left on his return to Wellington by the through express on Saturday. Mr John Fisher, of Otantan, was a through passenger for the north by the exnress on Saturday. Mr Lester Brown, representative of Fox Films, left on his return to Wellington by the through express on Saturday. Mr A. J. Hyder, general manager of the Union Insurance Society, left for Wellineton by the express on Saturday. Mr D. Clifton Lewis, managing director of New Zealand Radio, Ltd., was a passenger by the exnress on Saturday on his return to Auckland. _ Mr G. Henry, managing director of G. Henry and Co., Ltd., travelled to Christchurch by the through express on Saturday. , , . _ Mr W. R. Brinsley returned to Dunedin on Saturday by the through express from the north. Dr H. Douglas, of Hamilton, _ has been appointed a member of the Medical Council of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association. The Rev. T. R. Richards, who entered the ministry in 1895 and has been in charge of the Taranaki Street Methodist Church, Wellington, for the past five years, has intimated that he 'will retire from the active work of the ministry in April, 1935. . . , Advice has been received oy the management of the Regent Theatre that Mr Colin Tapley, of Dunedin, who was one of the New Zealand winners of Paramount’s “ Search for Beauty contest, dm undergone successful tests at Hollywood, and has been given a six months acting contract with a possible extension. The Rev. A. A. Murray, D.D., formerly of Auckland and at present minister of the Presbyterian Church at Honey Brook, near Philadelphia, haa accepted a unanimous call to Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. His induction will take place next month. A Press Association cable message from Sydney states that Mr Hugh Colhs Barry, aged 21, has been selected as the New South Wales Rhodes Scholar for 1934. He has completed his medical course at the Sydney University with distinction. A Press Association telegram from Wellington states that the retirement is announced of Captain J. R. Middleton, D 5.0., R.N. (retired), from the directorship of Naval Reserves in New Zealand. Captain E. G. Morris, R.N. (retired), replaces him, and has already taken over his duties. Mr C. E. Sligo (formerly of New Zealand), who was editor of the Brisbane Daily Mail for 11 years until its merger with the Courier, has joined the hterary sHff of the Sydney Morning Herald. Mr Sligo did not join the staff- of the CourierMail at the amalgamation, but temporarily undertook the office of associate and news editor of the paper.
