SHOP ASSISTANTS’ WAGES
A STATEMENT REFUTED AWARD RATES FREQUENTLY EXCEEDED. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, November 25. Interviewed in reference to a statement in Parliament that 95 per cent, of the shops in New Zealand to-day are hot paying award rates, Mr Bishop, secretary of the New Zealand Federation of Drapers, Clothiers, and Boot Retailors, said the statement was evidently due to some misunderstanding, and had given considerable concern to the members of his organisation. So far from the fact being that 95 per cent, were not paying award rates, almost the reverse was the case so far as his organisation was concerned. Junior shop assistants were paid award rates in most cases, and where they were not paid award rates they were paid in excess of award rates. Some firms paid the whole of their assistants, both junior and senior, in excess of the award rates. As regarded the trade as a whole throughout New Zealand, it was a fact that a large proportion of senior assistants were paid in excess of award rates. This had had always been the practice of the trade, and in spite of the difficult trading conditions existing at present it was still the trade practice.
