A NORWEGIAN HERO

The thousandth anniversary of the death of King Harald the Fairhaired •was celebrated at the small city of Haugesund, in South-western Norway. The Viking King was the first monarch that succeeded in uniting the separated small Norse kingdoms under one rule in the year 782, and 1000 years later there is a magnificent monument in his honour on the spot where the first ruler of Norway won the final decisive victory over his opponents. At the foot of this monument the services commemorating the death day of King Harald were held in the presence of his successor on the Norwegian Throne, King Haakon VII. Vast crowds were assembled around the monument when King Haakon arrived wearing the uniform of an admiral of the Norwegian navy. His popularity became apparent when the musicians played “ God Save the King,” stopping at the end of the first verse,' and the public insisted on singing the whole song, continuing without the accompaniment of the orchestra. King Haakon delivered the principal speech.
