Most people.are under the impression that the Royal Mint coins money for the British Empire only, but it has been revealed by Sir Robert Johnson, deputy master and comptroller, that it has the making of the coinage of all Europe with the exception of Germany and France, and that its clientele extends from Guatemala to Lithuania. To secure a foreign order means putting in a tender in competition with other big national mints. The transaction is purely a matter of business. A big order was recently completed for Jugoslavia, consisting of 10.000. ten-dinar pieces and 5,500,000 fifty-dinar pieces. Working at full capacity the Royal Mint can turn out 1.000. coins a day. Of the 235,000,000 coins struck for foreign countries up to 1930, 128,000,000 were silver. The mint has a great asset in its own special alloy of silver, zinc, copper and nickel tha«. is much appreciated abroad, since it wears well and, above all, retains its colour.
